There are eight Empowered Action Group (EAG)
States, namely, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and three
sister states : Uttaranchal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. It was seen that the EAG States had poor
indicators on demographic stabilization at the time of launching the National Rural
Health Mission (NRHM). Here below we
intend to have some idea of status of Chronic Illnesses in these Group of
States individually and also in the State of Assam. One Large Scale Annual
Health Survey has been conducted in the year 2010-11 for eight EAG States
besides the state of Assam, the major North-Eastern State of India. Here below the prevalence of Acute Illness in
the various EAG States and in the Assam North-East Major State have been given
per one lakh (one tenth of a million) persons.

Using
population provisional estimates are from Census 2011, the number of people
diagnosed for any type of Chronic Illness in EAG states and Assam State can
also be estimated.
It can be seen that prevalence of Acute
Illness is much higher in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh (around 13%) than in any of the
EAG Group of States (next being in Assam which is around 11%). Surprisingly, Jharkhand has a low degree of Acute
Illness of 5.5%, less than that in Bihar.
Rajasthan has the least prevalence (around 3.5%) of Acute Illnesses. Chhattisgarh,
Odisha and followed by Madhya Pradesh have almost the similar prevalence
(around 10%) of Acute Illnesses.
It can be seen that Fever of all types
is troubling most the inhabitants of most of these states and Diarrhea/ Dysentery is the acute illness
which is effecting least the residents of most of these states.
Diarrhea/ Dysentery
is seen to be
more effecting the inhabitants of Bihar, followed by Assam and then by Madhya
Pradesh.
Prevalence of ARI illness is highest in Assam, followed by Bihar and then UP. It is observed to be least prevalent in
Rajasthan out these nine states.
Fever is effecting the residents of UP most,
followed by those of Bihar and then by those of Odisha.
