The prevalence of Acute Illness in Assam
for the year 2008 was 11225 per lakh population i.e. around 11.2%. The
prevalence was higher in rural areas as compared to urban areas. Further, the
prevalence of Acute Illness was observed higher among females as compared to
males. The trend was similar in both rural and urban areas.
The details on persons suffering from
specific acute illnesses such as Diarrhea, Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) and Fever are presented
as under:

The prevalence of fever alone was 5%
it being higher in rural areas as compared to urban areas. Diarrhea/ Dysentery
had prevalence of 1.3% it being again higher in rural areas as compared to
urban areas. The prevalence of ARI was at 3.2% at being higher in rural as
compared to urban.
These
3 diseases together account for about 84.4% of acute illnesses in rural areas
and 84.2% in urban areas as could be seen from the table below:
