Further Decline in Maternal Mortality Ratio in Bihar State in India

According to Annual Health Survey, Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in Bihar state, which stood at 305 per lakh of live births in year 2010-11, declined to 294 per lakh of live births in year 2011-12 i.e. by 11 points.  The same was 312 (combined for Bihar and Jharkhand) as seen through SRS in the years 2004-06.

The same may be a result of effective implementation of the Central Scheme of Janani Suraksha Yojana etc.  The MMR level is low as compared to the State of Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, but much more needs to be done if we compare the same with that of other eastern states of India like West Bengal, Odisha and even Jharkhand.
