Basic Characteristic of Indian Villages



The 2011 Census data released by Office of Registrar General of India just recently has been further analyzed in order to get Characteristic of Indian Village.  There are about O.6 million villages in India and these house over 833 million people i.e. the average size or occupants per village  comes out to be about 1400. The other characteristics are:
Ø  The villages with population of less than 200 are about 82 thousand (14% of total number) and the average population is only 100 and these house not even one percent of total rural population. 
Ø  The villages with population between 200 and 500 are about 115 thousand (19% of total number) and the average population is only 346 and these house not even five percent of total rural population.
Ø   The villages with population between 500 and 1000 are about 142 thousand (24% of total number) and the average population is only 729 and these house over twelve percent of total rural population.
Ø   The villages with population between 1000 and 2000 are about 139 thousand (23% of total number) and the average population is only 1419 and these house about twenty four percent of total rural population.
Ø  The villages with population between 2000 and 5000 are about 96 thousand (16% of total number) and the average population is only 2995 and these house about thirty five percent of total rural population.
Ø  The villages with population between 5000 and 10000 are about 18.6 thousand (3% of total number) and the average population is only 6642 and these house about fifteen percent of total rural population.
Ø  The villages with population over 10000 are only 4682 (0.8% of total number) and the average population is 15456 and these house about 8.7 percent of total rural population.  The bigger villages lie mostly in Bihar (1129), Kerala (797), Uttar Pradesh (545), Andhra Pradesh (482) and West Bengal (417).
India is having variety of villages both small and big ones.  The following table gives state wise averages of smallest class of up to 200 populations, of biggest class of over 10000 populations and overall average size are as below:
