Basic Characteristic of North India’s Villages


The 2011 Census data released by Office of Registrar General of India just recently has been further analyzed in order to get characteristic of Indian Village, particularly of Northern part of India which comprise of its states namely, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, NCT Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.  There are about O.2 million villages (about one third of total India) in North India and these house over 263 million people i.e. the average size or occupants per village  comes out to be about 1300. The other characteristics are:
Ø  The villages with population of less than 200 are about thirty and a half thousand (15% of total number) and the average population is only 94 and these house about one percent of its total rural population. 
Ø  The villages with population between 200 and 500 are about 37 thousand (18% of total number) and the average population is only 346 and these house not even five percent of its total rural population.
Ø   The villages with population between 500 and 1000 are about 46 thousand (23% of total number) and the average population is only 731 and these house about thirteen percent of its total rural population.
Ø   The villages with population between 1000 and 2000 are about 47 thousand (24% of total number) and the average population is only 1423 and these house about twenty six percent of total rural population.
Ø  The villages with population between 2000 and 5000 are about 33 thousand (17% of total number) and the average population is only 2982 and these house about thirty eight percent of total rural population.
Ø  The villages with population between 5000 and 10000 are about 5.5 thousand (3% of total number) and the average population is only 6560 and these house about fourteen percent of total rural population.
Ø  The villages with population over 10000 are only 878 (0.4% of total number) and the average population is 13512 and these house about 4.5 percent of total rural population. The bigger villages lie mostly in Uttar Pradesh.
Northern India is having variety of villages. The following table gives state wise averages of smallest class of up to 200 populations, of biggest class of over 10000 populations and overall average size are as below:
