The
prevalence of Acute Illness in Bihar for the year 2008 was 12898 per lakh
population i.e. around 12.9%. The prevalence was higher in rural areas as
compared to urban areas. Further, the prevalence of Acute Illness was observed
higher among females as compared to males. The trend was similar in both rural
and urban areas.

details on persons suffering from specific acute illnesses such as Diarrhea, Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI)
and Fever are presented as under:

The
prevalence of fever alone was 7.1% it being higher in rural areas (7.3%) as
compared to urban areas (5.9%). Diarrhea/ Dysentery had prevalence of 2.1%. The
prevalence of ARI was 3.0%.
These
3 diseases together account for about 95% of acute illnesses both in rural
areas and in urban areas as could be seen from the table below:
