One
clearly gets the message that where there was already saturation stage in case
of a few UTs, the progress during the decade (2001-11) had been marginal. Although every state has progressed in this
respect, but the progress had been most dismal for the states of Bihar and
Uttar Pradesh as the requirement is much more. The rank of Bihar remains the
last and not even one-fifth of its households are using electricity as their primary source of lighting i.e. the majority are burning
kerosene for lighting. The position in Uttar Pradesh and Assam is also not very
encouraging as only one third are using electricity for lighting. Because of heavy weights namely, Uttar
Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand and
Odisha, the position of India is not very bright in this respect as only
two-third are using electricity for lighting at nights. The comfort is mainly in all the southern
states, Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, hilly states (J&K and
Himachal Pradesh) and other small states and UTs. Out of North East States, Sikkim , Mizoram and
Nagaland are more prosperous in this respect.
