QUARTER OF MARRIED WOMEN HAVE UNMET NEED FOR FAMILY PLANNING IN EIGHT EAG STATES OF INDIA


Unmet need for family planning is defined as the percentage of currently married women who either want to space their next birth or stop childbearing entirely but are not using any contraception.


Bihar
As per AHS (2010-11), 39 percent of married women in Bihar have an unmet need for family planning. The unmet need for spacing and limiting methods is respectively 21.3% and 17.9%. The unmet need is a 30% for urban Bihar than in 40.6% rural areas.

Jharkhand
As per AHS (2010-11), 31 percent of married women in Jharkhand have an unmet need for family planning. The unmet need for spacing and limiting methods is respectively 16 and 14 percent. The unmet need is 22 percent for urban Jharkhand.

Madhya Pradesh
As per AHS (2010-11), over twenty-two percent of married women in Madhya Pradesh have an unmet need for family planning.  The unmet need for spacing and limiting methods is respectively 14% and 9%.  The unmet need is a 4% less for urban Madhya Pradesh than in rural areas.


Chhattisgarh
As per AHS (2010-11), about twenty-six percent of married women in Chhattisgarh have an unmet need for family planning.  The unmet need for spacing and limiting methods is respectively 16% and 11%.  The unmet need is over 3.4% less for urban Chhattisgarh than in rural areas.

Odisha
As per AHS (2010-11), twenty-three percent of married women in Odisha have an unmet need for family planning.  The unmet need for spacing and limiting methods is respectively 11% and 12%.  The unmet need is a 2% less for urban Odisha than in rural areas.


Rajasthan
As per AHS (2010-11), twenty percent of married women in Rajasthan have an unmet need for family planning.  The unmet need for spacing and limiting methods is respectively 12% and 8%.  The unmet need is a less (17%) for urban Rajasthan than in rural areas.

Uttar Pradesh
As per AHS (2010-11), about thirty percent of married women in Uttar Pradesh have an unmet need for family planning.  The unmet need for spacing and limiting methods is respectively 17% and 13%.  The unmet need is over 8% less for urban Uttar Pradesh than in rural areas.

Uttarakhand
As per AHS (2010-11), 23.2 percent of married women in Uttarakhand have an unmet need for family planning.  The unmet need for spacing and limiting methods is respectively 12% and 11%.  The unmet need is less (19.5%) for urban Uttarakhand than in rural areas.

Let us consider the information regarding the total unmet need for EAG States of India as estimated in AHS (2010-11).

Thus in these eight EAG states which populate about half of the India’s population, the unmet need for spacing, limiting and total is about 15%, 12% and 27% respectively.
