Maternal health of two million plus urban agglomerations/cities of Chhattisgarh State of India



Maternal Health of the one major million plus city of Chhattisgarh State of India namely Raipur (Capital City), and that of Urban Agglomeration (UA) of Durg-Bhilainagar which is also only one million plus UA in Chhattisgarh in Durg district of the State have been discussed here.

RAIPUR

Only Raipur, Capital city of Chhattisgarh is a million plus city of Chhattisgarh.  It has always been a multicultural city.  Raipur district has the second highest urban population (over 36%) in the State.  This metro city is the administrative headquarters of Raipur District and Raipur Division. The high rate of urbanization is attributed to its administrative, trading, tourism based economic activities.  As per provisional reports of Census India, population of Raipur City is 1,010,087. The sex ratio of Raipur City is 945 per 1000 males, whereas Child sex ratio is 929 per 1000 boys.

Based on the results of Annual Health Survey, 2010, maternal health of urban Raipur district is presented as below.           

Fertility

The Total Fertility Rate for Raipur city was estimated at 2.5 which is broadly equals mean number of children ever born to women age 15-49 years. The births of order 3 and above were reported by 26.5% only and women with 2 children and wanting no more child was as high as 46.6%. Further as high as 45.6% of births had interval of 36 months or more. The girls marrying below the legal age of 18 years were only 4.7%.
61% reported using any family planning method. The most common methods of family planning were female sterilization - 45% and condoms as 4%. The use of IUD was just 1% and pills 2.6%.  The traditional method was reported as being used by 7%. The total unmet need for family planning was 22%, 12.6% for spacing and 9.4% for limiting.
Ante Natal Care

Though mothers receiving any ante natal check up were 95%, only 17% had full ANC. Around 37% of pregnant women received ANC from Government sources. Of various components of ANC, at least one TT received by 95%, BP taken 81%, blood examination for Hb 76%, underwent ultrasound 47%. Though 81% pregnant women received 3 or more ANCs, those who consumed IFA for 100 days or more was only 18%.

Delivery Care

About 55% of deliveries in Raipur were conducted in institutions, of which 20% were in Government institutions and 36% in private institutions. The home deliveries were 45% of which 42% were conducted by skilled health personnel. Caesarian cases were as high as 59%, about 63% being conducted in private institutions.
It is important to note that because of high demand on beds for institutional deliveries, in about 34% of the cases the stay in the hospital after delivery was less than 24 hours. About 79% mothers received post natal care and new born were also checked.
Importantly, 17% of mothers availed financial assistance for deliveries under JSY and 67% of mothers availed financial assistance for government institutional delivery.


DURG-BHILAINAGAR
Urban Agglomeration (UA) of Durg-Bhilainagar is a million plus UA in Chhattisgarh in Durg district of the State.  Durg city has the head quarter of Durg district.  Bhilai Nagar is one of its major cities which is famous for the Bhilai Steel Plant, which is the largest steel plant in India and known for being the only manufacturer of rails in the country used by Indian Railways.  This city is in eastern central India. The city is located 25 kilometres west of the capital Raipur, on the main Howrah–Mumbai rail line, and National Highway 6.

Durg-Bhilai Nagar Urban Agglomeration (UA) has the second highest population in the State. As per provisional reports of Census India, population of Bhilai Nagar is 625,697. The sex ratio of Bhilai Nagar is 942 per 1000 males, whereas Child sex ratio is 917 per 1000 boys.

Fertility

The Total Fertility Rate for Bhilai Nagar city was estimated at 2.3 which is broadly equals mean number of children ever born to women age 15-49 years. The births of order 3 and above were reported by 19% only, but women with 2 children and wanting no more child was as high as 43%. Further as high as 45% of births had interval of 36 months or more. The girls marrying below the legal age of 18 years were around 2.4%.
About 63 percent reported using any family planning method. The most common methods of family planning were female sterilization 51% and condom as 4.6%. The use of IUD was about 0.6% and pills 1.4%.  The traditional method was reported as being used by 4%. The total unmet need for family planning was 21%, 10% for spacing and 11% limiting.

Ante Natal Care

Though mothers receiving any ante natal check up were 99%, only 31% had full ANC. Around 33% of pregnant women received ANC from Government sources. Of various components of ANC, at least one TT received by 99%, BP taken 92%, blood examination for Hb 86%, underwent ultrasound 59%. Though 81% pregnant women received 3 or more ANCs, those who consumed IFA for 100 days or more was only 35%.

Delivery Care

About 61% of deliveries in Bhilai Nagar were conducted in institutions, of which 21% were in Government institutions and 40% in private institutions. The home deliveries were only 39% of which 58% were conducted by skilled health personnel. Caesarian cases were as high as 55%, about 60% being conducted in private institutions.
It is important to note that because of high demand on beds for institutional deliveries, in over one third of the cases the stay in the hospital after delivery was less than 24 hours. About 84% mothers received post natal care and new born were also checked.
Importantly, 17% of mothers availed financial assistance for deliveries under JSY and 66% of mothers availed financial assistance for government institutional delivery.
