Prevalence of Chronic Diseases in Odisha State of India


Odisha is one of the eight Empowered Action Group (EAG) States of India.  The state comprised of 41.9 million people and around 21.2 million (more than half) males as per census 2011.  The urban population was around 7 million with little more than half of them were males (3.6 millions) in 2011.  Here below the prevalence of Chronic Illnesses in Odisha State has been given sex wise and as per their residence too. These rates are based on one Large Scale Annual Health Survey which was conducted in the year 2010-11 for eight EAG States besides the state of Assam, the major North-Eastern State of India.  Here below the prevalence of Chronic Diseases in Odisha State have been given per one lakh (one tenth of a million) males and females.

It can be seen that prevalence of Chronic Illness is much higher in Urban Odisha (around 7.9% for males and 8.7% for females) than in Rural Odisha (around 6.1% for males and 6.6% for females). It may also be observed that females in the state are more chronically ill than males.  It may be seen that most prevalent chronic disease is Hypertension in both the rural and urban Odisha and TB is the least prevalent chronic illness in both the rural and urban areas.  In urban Odisha, second most prevalent chronic disease is Diabetes.  In rural Odisha, second most prevalent chronic disease Asthma followed by Diabetes.
In the State, prevalence of arthritis is more in both the rural and urban areas with females.  Asthma is little more prevalent chronic disease in urban areas than in the rural areas with females.  Tuberculosis is the last in the list as per its prevalence vis-a- vis other listed chronic illnesses in urban Odisha.  Its prevalence is more with rural males and females than urban males and females respectively of the state.
Males in both areas are more prone to be Diabetics than females, whereas females are more hypertensive than males in both rural as well as in urban parts of the state. 
Males are more down with Asthma than females in rural, whereas females are more prone to this disease than males.
