Prevalence of Chronic Diseases in Bihar State of India


Bihar is one of the eight Empowered Action Group (EAG) States of India.  The state comprised of 103.8 million people and around 54.2 million (more than half) males as per census 2011.  The urban population was around 11.7 million with little more than half of them were males (6.2 millions) in 2011.  Here below the prevalence of Chronic Illnesses in Bihar State has been given sex wise and as per their residence too. These rates are based on one Large Scale Annual Health Survey which was conducted in the year 2010-11 for eight EAG States besides the state of Assam, the major North-Eastern State of India.  Here below the prevalence of Chronic Diseases in Bihar State have been given per one lakh (one tenth of a million) males and females.

It can be seen that prevalence of Chronic Illness is much higher in Rural Bihar (around 8% for males and 10% for females) than in Urban Bihar (around 6.6% for males and 8.1% for females). It may also be observed that females in the state are more chronically ill than males.  It may be seen that most prevalent chronic disease is Arthritis in both the rural and urban Bihar and TB is the least prevalent chronic illness in urban areas, whereas Diabetes is the least prevalent chronic illness in rural areas.  In urban Bihar, second most prevalent chronic disease is Hypertension followed by Diabetes.  In rural Bihar, second most prevalent chronic disease is Asthma followed by Hypertension.
In the State, prevalence of Hypertension, Asthma and Arthritis are more in both the rural and urban areas with females than males. 
Tuberculosis is the last in the list as per its prevalence vis-a- vis other listed chronic illnesses in urban Bihar.  Its prevalence is more with rural males and females than urban males and females respectively of the state.
Males in both areas are more prone to be Diabetics and TB than females.
