The total fertility rate (TFR) is one of the important indicator which one has to be involved if one is studying or analyzing the demographic data or Health Statistics.
The TFR is a calculated rate of live births for
women in a specific area. It takes into account age-specific groups over a
five-year period generally and can be applied to different size hypothetical
groups to estimate live births in a region. The TFR can also be used in
conjunction with the death rate to determine the population replacement rate or
further constrained to specific.
Following is the procedure for calculations of fertility rates:
1.
We first choose or fix
the area of which we need to find the fertility rates. These are calculated by using the birth
statistics for women ages 15 to 49 for the chosen areas.
2. Have the women into various age categories in
increments of say five years (15-19; 20-24; etc.).
3.
Divide the number of
live births in each age category of women by the number of women in each
category to determine the age specific fertility rates for each set of women.
Multiply this number by 1,000 to postulate the age-specific fertility rate (ASFR)
for each five-year group. This ASFR is the number of children a hypothetical
group of 1,000 women would have using this rate, but other numbers can be used
to simulate different group sizes or removed to simulate live births per woman.
4.
Add the number of
children per 1,000 women for each age category. Multiply the value by five to
account for a five-year period for each age group. This value is the total
fertility rate for the specified group size.
But the exact estimate is the ratio of total number of children born to
mothers covering all age groups.
