As per recent 2011 census, India has 7935 towns in various States/ Union Territories (UTs). Out of these 7935 towns, 497 are class - 1 towns (i.e. the towns with more than hundred thousand people) and 45 are the ones which populate over one million persons.
Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, NCT Delhi, Bihar, Chattishgarh and Karnataka States have one each million plus cities.
Punjab, West Bengal and Jharkhand states have two each million plus cities, whereas Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have three each. Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are each having four million plus cities. Uttar Pradesh have six, whereas Maharastra has the maximum of 10 million plus cities.
Tamil Nadu has the maximum number of towns and these are 1097 towns, out of which only 32 are class - 1 towns and only three (Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore are million plus towns.
Uttar Pradesh has the second highest number of towns (915) with 64 class-1 towns, out of which six are million plus.
West Bengal has the third highest number of towns (909) with 61 class-1 towns, out of which only two are million plus.
Maharastra state has only 535 towns with 44 class - 1 towns, out of which 10 are million plus. Greater Mumbai has the maximum population.
Kerala has the fifth highest number of towns (520) with only 7 class-1 towns, out of which no one is million plus.
The six states/ UTs namely, Goa, Sikkim, Arunachal, Dam & Diu, Dadar & Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep do not have even a single class - 1 town. There are ninteen states/ UTs do not have even a single million plus cities. The States/ UTs are Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Puduchery, Orissa, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, all the North Eastern States, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Goa, Dam & Diu, Dadar & Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep.
